The Big 2-0

Friday, April 11, 2008

Well, I was pretty excited to be leaving the teenage years behind, so Meghan and I made my birthday cake. That way we would definitely have a party. It was a simple three-layer heart-shaped cake covered with green-colored fondant. The flowers and leaves were also made out of fondant, and the yellow centers of the flowers were done in buttercream.

Foerster Wedding

February 2008

>3-tier
>square
>vanilla cake

>white buttercream frosting
>hand-done text with edible ink on edible paper
>ribbon and topper provided by customer

This was the third official wedding cake I did, with help from my best friend Meghan. It was the first time making a big cake with buttercream frosting. It came out nice, but I decided that I prefer working with fondant.

Freeman-Schulz Wedding

December 27, 2007

>square
>3-tier
>chocolate cake

>white fondant
>red fondant ribbon

This was my second official wedding cake, and it was a learning experience. I learned in particular the difficulties of delivering. The reception was in Salt Lake on a cold winter evening. The heater in the car made the fondant start to melt a little bit, so it came out a little shiny, and the ribbon didn't stay as nice as it looked before it was transported. It still looked fine and tasted great, but now I know in the future that you can't let it get too warm.

Brady-Holbrook Wedding

>3-tier
>hexagon
>vanilla cake

>white fondant
>baby blue buttercream accents

This was the first official wedding cake that Meghan and I made. We were pretty nervous because we wanted it to be perfect. In the end, there was nothing to worry about, because it came out beautifully. The flowers were added on once we got to the reception hall.

Monkey Face

This is just a simple cake I made for a friend's birthday. They wanted a monkey face, so I just made a regular vanilla cake (and two vanilla cupcakes). Then I put it together in the shape of a monkey face and used colored vanilla frosting. Super simple, but cute!

Cake Party #2

Meghan and I made this cake as a practice for our friends' wedding cake that we would be making in December. We wanted to practice 1) using square pans and 2) making fondant ribbon. We also just wanted an excuse to make a cake. The inside was chocolate. We used white fondant to cover the cake, then decorated with red-colored fondant that we cut into strips to make the ribbon. We put the bow on top because we had leftover fondant and it looked weird without anything on top. Then we invited over the entire ward. It was a huge success!

Wedding Dress Cake

This was a cute little cake that Meghan and I made to look like a wedding dress. Just a simple 3-tier round cake with white fondant that we folded in the back to look like a train. Then we rolled up some fondant into little balls to look like buttons. The ribbon is made out of white fondant dusted with edible gold shimmer dust.
