Jungle Birthday

Meghan and I decided to get a little bit fancy for a friend's birthday cake. The inside was checkered chocolate and party mix cake. The bottom tier was covered with green fondant and surrounded by green fondant blades of grass. The top tier was covered with blue fondant, decorated with light blue fondant circles, then topped off with white fondant ribbon and bow. The animals were made by covering two different sized ball separators with colored fondant. We got this idea from a winter cake that uses the ball separators to make snowmen. After some creative sculpting (thank goodness I have so much experience with Play-Doh!)and an edible ink marker, our little jungle animals were ready to go, and the birthday girl loved it.

Cake Party

Meghan and I decided to make a cake and invite the entire ward over for a party. We really just wanted an excuse to make a cake and try out fondant for the first time. Oh, and of course we wanted to meet all the new people who had moved in for the school year. We literally went around to every apartment in the complex and invited everyone. Anyway, the inside was chocolate cake which we covered with green fondant. The borders were made out of white fondant rolled into balls. The vines were thinly rolled fondant, and the leaves were punched out of the green fondant as well. The flowers were made out of yellow fondant, and the centers were edible sugar pearls. All in all, I think it was a pretty successful first try with fondant decorating.

Simple Birthday Cake

This was a simple birthday cake I threw together rather last minute. The inside was checkered chocolate and cherry chip cake. I used white buttercream for the frosting, the borders, and the flourishes. I used blue colored buttercream for the text.
